Tanzania Mammal Atlas Project

Test map not for scientific use

The Tanzania Mammal Atlas Project is hosted at the Tanzania Carnivore Centre (TCC) at TAWIRI. "The project will help Tanzania meet its obligations under the Biodiversity Convention by developing a national conservation action plan for its mammal species." (from the project description)

My contributions to this project has been through my temporary position at Conservation Information and Monitoring Unit at TAWIRI. Representing TAWIRI's commmitment to the project CIMU is assisting with database design and aerial survey data. Our must substantial contributions so far are in part or whole to:

  • rework the database and transfer the tables to MySQL
  • make the old Access database into a database front-end
  • make an initial web-page system for access to data through an internal web-server
  • establish proper backup-systems
  • start using MapServer to generate maps on-the-fly in the web-system

Documentation is one of the pending issues. I am trying to solve this by adding a documentation wiki-page here:

The TMAP project leads are Dr. Sarah Durant with the Institute of Zooology, Zoological Society of London, and Dr Charles Foley whom also is with the Zoological Society of London. Other persons working on the project are Lara Foley, Alex Lobora and Edwin Konzo. Alex and Edwin has both been extremely important in explaining to me the central issues of the data collection. Developing a database is not possible without a close understanding of the information gathering and structuring process.

A demonstration website is set up here:
